Smelt Fry
The Smelt Fry, which the Community Club sponsors each April, is our major fund raiser. The event is held in the historic Herbster Gym which is handicap accessible. People come from near and far each year to enjoy our golden fried smelt, Captain Ken's Firehouse Beans, coleslaw, fresh bread, relishes, and assorted desserts. A highlight of the event is the continuous door prizes given away throughout the evening. Merchants in the surrounding areas donate the prizes for which we are very grateful. The grand finale of the evening is the raffle. Prizes ranging from cash to handmade items are donated by individuals and organizations around the area.
Corn and Brat Fest
The Community Club sponsors a Corn and Brat Feed each summer during the first weekend in August. The event is held at the pavilion on the lake front rain or shine. Besides serving corn on the cob and brats, we also provide hot dogs, polish sausage, soda, coffee, and your favorite condiments. As a conclusion to the event, we have a Duck Race on the Cranberry River with cash prizes given to the first three ducks to cross the finish line. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer on their duck at the river.
Family Fun Night
Each October, the Herbster Community Club sponsors a Family Fun Night for the children and adults from the surrounding area. A small fee is collected at the door from each family. This allows them to enjoy food, games, and prizes throughout the evening. Cash prizes are awarded for the best carved pumpkin and best costume in each age group. Everyone is welcome to have their picture taken as a souvenier of the evening
Christmas Party
Each December, the Community Club members and guests enjoy a cocktail party to celebrate the Christmas season. This is usually held at one of the local restaurants. Food items are usually donated for the local food kitc hens or we collect gifts which are given to children and families of the comm unity. This is a fun and relaxing event that helps to spread holiday cheer among all who attend .
The Herbster Community Club is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), organization for charitable and educational purposes in order to enhance, support, and maintain the overall quality of life in our community. Membership is open to residents, property owners, and businesses within the town of Clover. Annual dues are $15.00 per family. We welcome contributions above membership level which are tax deductible. We have several funds set up for donations. We meet at specified dates on the third Thursday of that month at 7:00 p.m. in the Herbster Gym..
The club sponsors many annual events including a Smelt Fry in April, Corn and Brat Feed with a Duck Race in August, Halloween Family Fun Night in October, and a Christmas Party in December. We also sponsor a bonfire on the shore of Lake Superior in October to socialize with members and friends while enjoying brats and smores on the beach. Starting in January and continuing throughout the winter, club members meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month at the local restaurants to play card games, board games, and dominoes. All who wish to participate are welcome.
Along with sponsoring these events the Club also provides valuable services to the community. These services include picking up litter along Highway 13 , cleaning up the cemetery each spring, recycling aluminum cans, and providing much appreciated support for community members who have suffered the loss of loved ones or who are enduring health problems.
Our fund raising events have helped create a usable community center in the historic Herbster Gym, a playground near the Lake Superior beach, welcome banners and signs, and Christmas decorations for Herbster. The Community Club has recently begun awarding a $1000 scholarship to a deserving senior each spring and has also helped finance other educational projects.
The Herbster Community Club is openly seeking active members, young, old, and anywhere in between to join us to help make Herbster a great place to live!
